Divorce Mediation is a type of “alternative dispute resolution” (ADR) which allows couples to obtain a divorce without a drawn-out and expensive court battle. The mediator guides spouses through discussions that attempt to resolve all disputes in order to finalize a divorce, such as: child support, alimony, or property division. At Vervaecke Law & Mediation we have the ability to successfully mediate divorces to save the parties time, money, and the headache of a court proceeding.

Once spouses reach an agreement through mediation, we ask an outside attorney to draw up a settlement agreement and/or a Decree for Dissolution of Marriage. Afterwards, this agreement or Decree is submitted to the Court. It is typical that Courts finalize divorces through mediation much faster than divorces that are handled in court proceedings, because the parties in a mediated divorce agree with one another.

In some cases, spouses only successfully mediate a few of their divorce-related issues. In this case, the spouses will have to go to court to resolve the unagreed upon issues or will have to settle at a later date.

Mediation can be a highly effective avenue for spouses to obtain a divorce if parties are willing to agree to the parameters set within the process of mediation. At Vervaecke Law & Mediation we strive to achieve a mutually beneficial agreement between the parties, while avoiding heightened conflict, expensive litigation, and time wasting tactics.
